Unprecedented population growth rates in low-income countries after the Second World War have changed their age structure completely. The demand for productive employment is not sufficient to absorb the new entrants to the labour force. Huge migration flows at a global level have been the result.
This course considers the dynamics of population growth, the schooling and skill formation of labour and the functioning of labour markets. The first part concentrates on the causes and effects of population growth. The scope for population control is assessed. International migration and brain drain get special attention.
The second part considers the skill formation (including educational policies)
of the population and the changes required to cope with the challenges posed by
integration into the world economy.
The functioning of labour markets and the impact of changes in the world economy
on these markets are the central focus of the third part. Major topics are the
effects of trade liberalisation on employment and the role of the urban informal
sector, especially with relation to exports.
