Content

In this one semester course, we focus explicitly on the capital markets of countries in Pacific Asia. Recently, these markets have been in the center of attention due to a deep crisis in stocks and currencies. The course consists of two parts: first, we will look at a number of general financial economic issues concerning emerging markets. During the first 7 or 8 sessions, we will discuss theoretical issues regarding International Finance, such as international parity relations and price discovery on currency markets. Special attention will be given to exchange rate arrangements such as pegging of a currency to e.g. the US dollar and the details on currency boards. We will address issues such as international diversification, international market efficiency, market imperfections and the relationship between international monetary variables and pricing of securities. Further, we will look into the role of the government in the organization of financial systems and introduced the concept ‘systemic risk’. The structure and role of international organizations like the IMF, the Worldbank and the OECD will be studied as well. Finally, we will devote one session to the specific threats and opportunities of investing in Emerging Markets.

During the final 7 or 8 lectures we will focus on individual countries in Pacific Asia. Regularly, someone from outside the university is invited. For example, in previous editions of this course a specialist from the Robeco group talked about South Korea, a person from the Dutch Central Bank gave a lecture on Japan, and the China Desk manager from MeesPierson Bank discussed the situation in China and Hongkong.
